What are Fats?

Fat is one of the 3 nutrients (along with protein & carbohydrates) that supply calories to the body.  Fat provides 9 calories per gram, more than twice the number provided by carbohydrates or protein.  Fat is essential for the proper functioning of the body.  Fats provide essential fatty acids, which are not made by the body and must be obtained from food.  Eating enough of the correct fat may actually help you manage your weight loss efforts.

High quality fats support a healthy heart, allow you to feel full and more satiated, reduce dry and itchy skin, reduce the pain of arthritis, help heal mood disorders, promote healthy weight, protection from oxidation, therefore decreasing disease and accelerated ageing.

Fats and oils for optimum health come from foods such as vegetable oils & whole grains, salmon, flaxseed oil (linseed oil) and walnut oils which are called polyunsaturated fats.  Avocados, peanuts, peanut oil, olive oil, almonds and hazelnuts”¨ are called monounsaturated fats.

Saturated fats are the leading cause of high cholesterol and a leading factor in heart disease.   Saturated fats occur naturally in many animal and some plant foods. Saturated fat is found in animal products and oils, including meat, whole diary products, egg yolks, cheese, coconut oils and palm oils.  Fats of any type should form no more than 25 to 35 percent of your daily calories.
